“Palimpsests” — Roman Hawran sings the poetry of Wasyl Stus;
commentary on texts and contexts: Olga Kich-Masłej PhD

Today in Nowica there was a concert by Roman Hawran, who sang for us the lyrics of the most outstanding Ukrainian poet of the second half of the 20th century and activist of the Ukrainian Helsinki Group Wasyl Stus. The audience heard poems from Wasyl Stus’s volume entitled “Palimpsests”.

Olga Kich-Masłej talked about the poet’s life and work, drawing attention to Stus’ presence in the consciousness of Ukrainian circles in Poland during the “Solidarity” period. She recalled the poet’s relationship with the outstanding Lemko — Mykola Horbal.

At the same time, a poetry and painting project entitled “Why the sky isn’t falling?“, which was organized by the Nowycia Foundation together with the Icon Gallery from Krynica and the Greek Catholic Youth Brotherhood — Sarepta.

The authors of the project were two talented Ukrainian artists: icon painter — Kateryna Kuziv and poet — Julia Wintoniw, who — considering the tragic situation in Ukraine — ask about the meaning of suffering, death, and the existence of God.

Julia Wintoniw’s poetic texts were presented by Olga Kich-Masłej and Zenon Wasylik.
